Preparing the Lumber for Your Woodworking Project

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Michael Russell Wood varies greatly in color and figure - even wood of the same species and boards from the same tree. You need to pay attention to how boards look when you’re putting then next to one another in a project. Otherwise, you may end up with color and figure differences that will detract from the appearance and be difficult to disguise with a finish. Whether you’re choosing boards at a lumberyard or from your own inventory, look through the supply and imagine how different grain and figure patterns would look if placed in various parts of your project. Be conscious of knots, splits, checks and other defects and determine how you would either use them to advantage or work around them. If you’re using veneered plywood or plan to veneer the wood yourself, think of how the figure in the veneer can be used to best advantage. Above all, pay attention to color variations, unless you intend to paint the piece you are making. For a table or chest top, lay the boards out in different groupings, flipping and turning them, until you find the best arrangement. Then mark the boards so you won’t mix them up as you prepare them. If you’re making the top from veneered plywood, decide what part of the 4×8 sheet you can use most advantageously. On a chest of drawers, give the same attention to picking the drawer fronts. When people look at what you’ve built, they won’t see the wonderful joints you’ve spent so much time and effort making. They’ll see the design, which includes your choice of boards and their positioning and they’ll see the finish. You won’t regret the time you spent selecting and arranging your wood. Before you begin working your lumber, make sure your tools are sharp and your machines are adjusted properly. Dull planer, jointer, or shaper knives and worn-out router bits will leave pronounced washboard-like mill marks in your wood that will require extra effort to remove. Chipped knives will leave unsightly ridges. And if the cutters on your machine tools are dull enough to burn or glaze the wood, they could ruin your project altogether. Poorly adjusted machine can snipe the ends boards and also cause glazing or burning. Always work toward the smoothest surface possible. If you’re joining a number of boards together to make a tabletop, you may want to use splines, dowels or biscuits to line up the boards so the surface is as flat and even as possible. If, after glue-up, uneven alignment is more than you want to try flattening by hand and you don’t have power equipment large enough to handle the job, look for a local millwork shop that will run the top through its wide-belt sander for you. The price and the trip are often worth it. If the top is too wide for any of the sanders in your area, plan to make the top in several sections; flatten each section separately, then join them together with splines, dowels or biscuits to line them up. Group Legal Plans - The Way to Go

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Mitch Hampson A properly developed group legal insurance plan can be the perfect complement to any employers work life initiative. Considering that many employees are nowadays increasingly swayed by benefit options when making career decisions, Legal insurance is certainly a viable product for many employers, and should not be overlooked. The benefits for the employer include increased efficiency and productivity from their workforce, and reduced administration costs to handle personal matters. Another very attractive benefit is the very low cost involved in researching and implementing a group legal plan. For the employee, a group legal plan is a cheap way to get legal coverage in much the same way as other traditional benefits. For not a lot of money infact as little as $20 per month deducted from payroll, an employee is put in touch with an attorney who can draft his will, buy or refinance a home, adopt a child and plan an estate. All this legal advice doesnt cost you a penny and is unlimited so thats great news for the employee. A great way to help minimize poor service and employer satisfaction, an employer should conduct both requirements analysis amongst its employee base to cover for their difference needs, and a due research to select the most appropriate legal plan to fit those requirements based on experience, integrity and track record. Group legal plans in the workplace have experienced lots of rapid growth recentlyBecause they are very useful to both employee and employer on a level scale. Accounting This article is shareware. Tips for Meeting Your Online Date Face to Face

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Jill Kane If you’ve been fortunate enough to meet someone special online, you’re probably pretty happy and looking forward to the time you get to meet him/her face to face. But perhaps you’re a little bit nervous, too. After all, when you’re dating online, you can re-read what you’ve written before you hit the send button, and when you chat, you aren’t making eye contact, so there’s still a bit of a cushion between you and the other person that may make you feel a bit safer. You could use your computer while sitting around in your favorite sweats and bunny slippers and not worry about how you looked. But the first real, live date in person means that they’re going to see you up-close and personal, and you suddenly have to think about a whole new set of issues. What should you wear? Will your laugh sound horrible? What about your hair (or lack of it)? Old insecurities might resurface. The good news is, you’ve already gotten past those first few awkward conversations that usually doom a blind date because you’ve already gotten to know each other. It also helps to remember that he/she is probably worried about the same things. Just remember that you’ve already relaxed and talked or emailed and chatted with this person, so you’re just adding a new dimension to an already established relationship, not starting over from square one. Meet Somewhere Comfortable Comfortable means casual - don’t blow it by deciding to meet at an upscale restaurant where either of you will be nervous about the numerous forks or interpreting the complicated wine list. Go somewhere that feels relaxed and friendly, making it easier to slide into conversation with the restaurant or cafe as the background, not the main event. The main event should be you two meeting each other. For the first meeting, forgo the movies - after all, you want the chance to talk and really make contact, don’t you? Sitting in the dark staring at a screen for two hours won’t accomplish much, so save that for further down the line. Instead, dinner and a nice stroll afterward, or (in bad weather) museum or art galleries are good ideas. You will have topics for conversation and plenty of time to stop whenever you want to. Sporting events are also great because they get the adrenalin pumping and the excitement is contagious, especially if you share a passion for the home team. Don’t make the first date intimate, and don’t meet someplace that isn’t public. Until you meet face to face, you can’t fully gauge someone’s intentions, so give yourself the opportunity to observe them in a public setting like a gallery, restaurant or sports arena - they way they act in these places will give you a real insight into their character that you just can’t get emailing or chatting one-on-one online. If it goes well and you get a good feeling, move on to more private dating situations in the future. Keep It Short The first date should be short - it keeps the pressure off, and gives you both a chance to review, think things over and decide what you think before moving on to the next date. If a date drags on too long, you can sometimes do things you might regret later simply because you didn’t know how to end the evening. One way to avoid this is to make the first date either a lunch date or a date mid-week, when you know you have to leave early because you have to be up early for work the next day. This way, either one of you can say, “I’d love to stay longer, but I really have to go for now. Let’s talk tomorrow (or whenever you feel comfortable suggesting) about when we can get together again.” You will have time to go home, process the evening, and really think about how it went and how your date made you feel. If you find yourself smiling, it was a success! Progesterone Cream: Tips for Proper Usage

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Marcus Peterson Instead of applying the progesterone cream directly, it can be used along with a moisturizing lotion. Lotions containing aloe vera oil usually work well and are easy to apply. After application, the medicine will be sent directly to the part where it is required. Overdose of this cream can cause hyperactive senses and less dosage after the body gets used to a certain amount can lead to acute depression. It is very important to use the cream cautiously. The cream should be applied at a particular time in a day. A physician, based on the tests, will have to decide when the best time is. The cream can be mixed with a small amount of moisturizer and massaged in circular motions till the cream is completely absorbed into the skin. The best places to apply the cream are where the skin would be soft to allow for easy absorption. Such areas of the body include the breasts, hands, inner thighs, and palms. Usually, the cream is applied twice a day or as advised by the physician. During the menstruation cycle the body produces a large amount of progesterone so it is not advised to apply the cream during this time. The dosage of the cream should vary with time and conditions. Pregnant women can use the cream in a very small dosage to reduce stretch marks. However, progesterone must be used as prescribed by the doctor to avoid depression or PMS. Women can start using progesterone cream a few years before menopause to minimize menopause effects such as insomnia, depression, stress, and fatigue. With expert medical advice on the correct usage of the progesterone cream, these effects can be curbed to a great extent. Progesterone Cream provides detailed information about progesterone cream, how to use progesterone cream, natural progesterone creams and more. Home Security from West Nile Virus

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Lance Winslow Is your home a breeding ground for mosquitoes? Do you have stagnant pools of water sitting around? Do you see black algae forming in puddles left on concrete areas with poor drainage? Do you have a birdbath, which you have not changed the water in and no birds are using with moss growing in it? Do you have low areas in your lawn where the sprinklers fill up making a miniature pond? You see you may be a perfect place for a Mosquito to lay 400 eggs ready to hatch and suck your blood. West Nile Virus is delivered to humans thru our friends the mosquitoes which are well adapted to out live humans with some 500 million years of evolution under their belt; safe to say, they are not going anywhere. They will be around after the human race is extinct and they were here before us. The Mosquitoes suck the blood from birds who have West Nile Virus and then give it to us as the stinger enters the skin and leaves. Viruses are very small and they ride along on the stinger. A female mosquito will only strike once, twice sometimes three times before she has the nutrients to lay her eggs. To prevent things from being easy for the egg laying mosquitoes it is imperative that you try and eliminate stagnant water or dampness. If you live in a rural area this maybe difficult and once the mosquitoes hatch they home in on the CO2 your body exudes. They are more likely to home in on a farm animal or bird, but people are fine by them. You need to secure your home with screens, do not leave the windows open unnecessarily without screens, close the doors. I am not advocating mosquito nets to sleep under, what I am saying is if you are smart you can drastically reduce your odds of attracting West Nile Virus, so think on this and make an honest assessment of your home? Are you West Nile Virus safe? Is your home security defense system in place? “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. He’s Just Not That Into You-Really!

Monday, September 17th, 2007

By Lisa Angelettie There was a publishing phenomenon that occurred when authors Greg Behrendt & Liz Tuccillo wrote the relationship/dating book - He’s Just Not That Into You. Women were reading it like they had no idea. No clue at all. Hey, I skimmed it in between feeding the kids and an episode of Desperate Housewives - but it all sounds like stuff we’ve heard before. I mean– really. Isn’t it all common sense? Do we as women not really know when a man doesn’t call us after a date that the guy just wasn’t that interested. I think we do. It seems as if we really want to know why? Why isn’t he interested. Was it something I said or did? Was it something I was wearing? Is it what I do for a living? Is it because I slept with him too fast or not at all? What is it! We just want to know. If not to fix it with you, then to be prepared for the next man. If we all weren’t so insecure about who we are and the position we play in this world - we wouldn’t second guess every move we make. I mean I’m all about trying to improve oneself. Recognizing mistakes. Correcting them. But basically, you are who you are. If the man you just had dinner with wasn’t interested enough to come back for more — then GirlShrink says (respectfully:) PEACE! Sometimes I think that our parents may have overdid things. They were so focused on boosting our self confidence and self-esteem that we believe that there must be a complicated explanation as to why someone wouldn’t be interested in us. I mean you - not interested in me? Huh? And then of course as I mentioned earlier there are those of us that swear that there are a million things wrong with us and we just want to know which one turned off this man that we were really interested in. We want to know what’s wrong with us. But really…no matter what our background or baggage we bring to the table - it’s a concept that we probably need to start teaching our children. Everyone is not going to love you. Everyone is not going to like you. And that’s okay. Do you hear me ladies? That is okay. So here are 5 things to remember… 1. Don’t change a thing. You know that you are just fine the way you are. 2. Go out tonight. Get right back on that horse again and be open to meeting more men. 3. Don’t hide in the land of DENIAL. Be honest with yourself and move on. 4. Ask for what your worth. Don’t settle for someone clearly sending you signals of indifference. 5. Use your common sense. You don’t need a book to tell you what your instincts already have! Lisa Angelettie, M.S.W., is a psychotherapist, author, and an online advice authority. Knitting - My Passion

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Holly Burnham I always wanted to be good at something, no not just good, I wanted to excel. Everyone does, whether they admit it or not. Through the years Ive tried all the needle arts, painting, sewing, cooking, gardening. Once, and this is a secret..I tried to write a book. Knitting seems to be my niche. I get compliments on my knitting. I like getting compliments and so I knit more. My first few attempts were very sad. My sweet daughter once wore a sweater for an entire winter that, because I had run out of yarn and bought something close enough, had one sleeve a different pink than the rest of the sweater. My son wore mittens with the thumbs so misplaced his entire wrist was exposed to the snow and cold. I knit two ugly sweaters for friends of ours one Christmas and proudly wrapped and presented them. Understandably, I never saw them sport them. I am better now. I produce decent garments for my grandchildren. This current generation owes a lot to the previous one. I knit for pleasure..my pleasure, and that is a good thing. As I get older I clearly see its important to take care of yourself. Knitting takes care of me. I experience a soothing sensation as I pick up my needles and start fondling the yarn. I preen with pride when someone enthusiastically admires something Ive knitted for them. I enjoy the camaraderie of fellow needle clickers. I want you to learn to knit because I cant imagine life without this past time, but more importantly, I want you to find something that fills you with joy. I want you to find your individual passion. Humans are, by nature, creative beings. Our lives are so full we sometimes neglect to find time for our personal pursuits. In my opinion, the secret is to try anything that interests you. You will be good at some and fail at others. Somewhere in your heart is a passion you need to nurture. Holly Burnham is a self admitted yarn addict. The addiction will be life long and there is no hope of remission. Her constant knitting has put the cleanliness of her home in peril. Her yarn stashes are havens for generations of moths.
